Isn’t finding an effective non-toxic deodorant such a drag? When you’ve grown up using aluminum anti-persperants like Secret and Lady Speed Stick, it’s hard to transition to a non-toxic deodorant–probably the most difficult beauty transition I’ve had to make.
But for now, Nature’s Gate Spring Fresh Deodorant ($5.29/2.5 oz. on their website) is my go-to product. Nature’s Gate is a company, that sells a wide variety of health and beauty products, including skin care, hair care, deodorants, oral care, and sun care. Their company website bears the PETA Cruelty Free & Vegan logo, and their mission includes a commitment to
“using pure, sustainably harvested herbs, fruits and essential oils, without animal-derived ingredients, to enhance the overall health and wellbeing of our customers and our planet.”
I had probably tried a dozen “natural” deodorants before I was introduced to this product. I had even tried making my own deodorant with baking soda, corn starch, and coconut oil, but it just didn’t stand a chance in the heat of the summer. Thankfully, my boyfriend found this product, and proved that even a smelly, sweaty man (sorry sweetheart) can smell pleasant without a drugstore, aluminum-containing anti-persperant.
Having said that, this product is not completely free of toxins. If you are allergic to synthetic fragrance, you might want to stay away. The Environmental Working Group’s website gives the Spring Fresh Deodorant stick a “MODERATE” toxicity level of 3, with Fragrance being the product’s most toxic ingredient (level 8!).
I have to admit that nothing quite compares to the power of an anti-persperant, which literally blocks your pores to reduce the amount that you sweat. But I’ve heard that with enough use, your body chemistry will readjust to the absence of an anti-perperant and you won’t want to cave in and run to the drugstore for a Lady Speed Stick.
