Burt’s Bees was definitely a beacon for the natural cosmetics industry. They have been around for a long time, are well established, and are even present in mainstream grocers and drugstores. What’s more is that their products are totally affordable, without skimping on the most important commitments to the environment and to the humane treatment of animals.
Are their products the least toxic on the market? Probably not. But they do have some admirable products. My boyfriend really and I both really enjoy their lip balms. At an inexpensive $3.00, we bought the Burt’s Bees Rejuvenating Lip Balm with Açaí.
It smells delicious, just like açaí. It makes my lips feel hydrated without having to reapply in 10 minutes. It has some really good-for-your-skin ingredients like sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and of course–açaí berry oil.
However, it has some questionable ingredients like “aroma (flavor)* natural flavor” and “linalool”. Also, for those of you looking for vegan products, Burt’s Bees isn’t for you. As the title obviously implies, many of their products are made with bee-derived ingredients, and this lip balm is no exception–beeswax is a main ingredient. It also contains Lanolin, an emulsifying wax secreted from the sebaceous glands of domestic sheep.
The product is certified by the Leaping Bunny, so it is considered “cruelty-free”, but it is not “vegan”.
If you’re looking for an affordable natural product that’s affordable and readily-available, Burt’s Bees Rejuvenating Lip Balm with Açaí is an excellent choice.
